ClubFeedmix Kapihan held in Candaba, Pampanga
Kapihan looks at exciting trends in value-added
tilapia products
The demand for frozen products is now on the rise based on the
number of households who opt to buy frozen foods in supermarkets. What makes
the latest trend in food preservation more interesting is that even fresh
aquaculture produce can now stay fresh longer than their actual shelf life if
they are frozen, and more consumers are now taking notice. Local tilapia
growers should take advantage of this trend as it could mean bigger income for
them.
A
gathering of fish growers and fishpond operators, ClubFeedmix Kapihan updated
tilapia growers on new revenue-raising opportunities when it discussed advanced
technology and expanding markets for value-added fish products. Held on July
30, 2004 at the Clat's Party House in Candaba, Pampanga, the gathering had
representatives from the local government of Candaba, Bureau of Fisheries and
Aquatic Resources (BFAR) officials and experts on tilapia-growing and fishpond
management.
Mr. Alvin Gimelo, general manager of
Fisher Farms, Inc presented the "Industry
Trends and Market Opportunities" for tilapia growers. In particular, he
discussed the prospects of tilapia value-added frozen products in the local and
international markets and the technology used to come up with these products.
Fisher Farms, Inc. is known for its appetizing selection of value-added frozen
tilapia products such as spring rolls, dumplings, and breaded fillets in
various flavors and frozen cuts. These are now becoming popular here and
abroad, especially among health-conscious buyers.

Center Chief IV of the National Freshwater Fisheries Technology Center of BFAR
in Munoz, Nueva Ecija; and Dr. Tereso Abella, Director of the Freshwater
