ClubFeedmix Kapihan held in Dagupan City
Kapihan tackles water management and bigger markets
for bangus products
Bangus growing can be a profitable business, that is, if one
knows the intricate details of raising bangus from the time the fingerlings are
removed from the hatchery and taken to the fish pond/pens where they are cared
for until they are ready to be sold The hardest task of this business is
maintaining an environment conducive to growth and full development of the
fingerlings and this can only be achieved if the fish grower is armed with the
correct information from the experts.
An exclusive club composed of the valued customers of Feedmix
Specialist, Inc. became the recipient of up-to-date information on water
management and other technical tips on bangus raising last August 24, 2004 in
Dagupan City, Pangasinan. Clubfeedmix is more than an ordinary membership club
of Feedmix loyal customers. Its gathering, known as the ClubFeedmix Kapihan has
become an event to look forward to as members and those in the fish-growing
business obtain all the essential information on managing their business,
market conditions, new technology and techniques in fish growing and other
tips.
Feedmix is a leading manufacturer of animal and aquatic nutrition
products with its AquaSystems brand popular in the fishing industry. From being
a manufacturer, the company has moved beyond to become an innovator not only in
the use of new technology but also in various programs and projects aimed at
improving the country's fish-growing sector. And Clubfeedmix and its activity,
the ClubFeedmix Kapihan, is one of these programs. "Our target is to bring the
ClubFeedmix Kapihan to as many regions as possible. This is our commitment to
the industry and to the people in this sector. Our goal is more than just
ensuring a profitable business for our customers, as we believe that by helping
them, we are also uplifting the living conditions of millions of people who
depend on fish growing as a source of livelihood," according to Rex Malabanan,
Manager of Feedmix's Communications Department.
At the ClubFeedmix Kapihan held in Dagupan City, information on
water management in fish ponds and fish pens - as presented by Feedmix Vice
President for Operations and Marketing Emmanuel Del Mundo - generated much
interests among the participants who shared their experiences and raised their
problems and concerns. These were aptly answered by Mr. Del Mundo who also
added that "the fish-growing sector has so many problems and concerns, and
those in the business often need more in-depth information on new technology
and advanced techniques to operate their business efficiently. For instance,
water management is an important aspect of the fish-growing business that
should not be overlooked so we decided to include such topic at this month's
Kapihan."
Along with Mr. Del Mundo, Ms. Felita C. Ugaban also took part in
the open forum to offer more tips on fish-growing. Ms. Ugaban is an
agricultural technologist of the City of Dagupan.
With Pangasinan's thriving bangus growing sector now contributing
substantially to the aquaculture industry, the ClubFeedmix Kapihan also invited
Alvin Gimelo, general manager of Fisher Farms, Inc. to present the "Industry
Trends and Market Opportunities" for bangus value-added products. Fisher Farms
is known for its selection of fish-based products such as spring rolls,
dumplings, breaded fillets in various flavors that are now becoming popular
here and abroad, especially among health-conscious buyers. "Bangus, being
abundant in the Philippines, has so many prospects locally and internationally.
Fisher Farms increases the available options that bangus growers can tap to
increase their revenues and expand their markets. With Pangasinan's growing
popularity as a source of delicious bangus, it is time for the bangus growers
to tap new markets for the harvest, other than the usual wet markets,"
explained Mr. Gimelo.
The ClubFeedmix Kapihan was held in Dagupan City in recognition
of Pangasinan's growing contribution to the aquaculture sector. Dagupan in
particular stands out from the rest as its milkfish has gained popularity
because of its delicious taste and soft, juicy flesh. Proud of this breed, the
City Government of Dagupan even holds the annual Bangus Festival to seal its
image as Bangus Capital of the World.
The ClubFeedmix Kapihan is organized by Feedmix in cooperation
with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and forms part of
Feedmix's long standing commitment to contribute its share for the development
of the fishing sector which serves as source of livelihood for millions of
Filipinos. Other Clubfeedmix Kapihan future meetings are scheduled in Batangas,
Camarines, Bicol, Cebu and Mt. Provinces.
